A Slightly Nervous Welcome & A Case for Sharing Your Truth

About a month ago, I spontaneously got the idea to start this blog.

This was the result of two things: a) I love to write — and how wild it is that quite a few of you reading this might not have even known that. Thought it was time to correct that. And b) I have a lot of thoughts rattling around in this big ole head of mine which makes for a surprisingly large amount of source material to work with.

This is far from my first blog. Discovering Tumblr in my teen years made sure of that. However, it is my first public writing blog, so it feels like something very new and yet very familiar all at once.

This blog is meant to be a space where I tell stories, most of which will be based on my own experiences. The last few years of my life up to the present have been full of growth, which has been wonderful but also slightly exhausting.

(Growing is not an easy thing.)

So, I want to document some of the big and the small lessons that I am learning. And I wanted to bring you all along for the ride.

Okay, taking a pause to get real here. When I decided to use my blog for this purpose, the very first thought that followed was, “literally who cares.” And then my brain (who is an actual bully) tried to finish me off with a: “what do you even have to offer?”

And isn’t that the question? What do I have to offer? Possibly nothing. Possibly everything. It stands to reason that the truth lies somewhere in between the two.

I have often questioned whether my voice and my perspective are anything of value. I’d be lying if I said I’ve worked through that self-doubt and am now totally convinced that they are, but here’s what I do know.

One: there are so many things that affect how we see the world and express ourselves. Our age, our gender, where we grew up, our family history. We all are very particularly shaped by our very particular life circumstances. There is no one on earth who shares every single life experience that has shaped who you are now and who you are becoming.

What you and I bring to the table is something that no one else can. And something as rare as that is meant to be treasured.

Two: whatever value our experiences have, they are worth so much more when we share them with others. I find few things as rewarding as when I put myself out there and that helps someone else feel seen. And there is nothing more comforting than when you’re going through something challenging and someone looks at you and goes, “me too.”

It’s so much more than a misery loves company thing. We are just not meant to navigate life without each other. As unique as we all are, our lives are like puzzle pieces, meant to fit together to create a much more profound picture than we could ever create alone.

So, this is me sticking it to my brain and making the decision to share myself and my life with you all by doing something I love. You may learn something new from it or you may not, but either way I hope you enjoy reading.

Unless otherwise stated, prepare to hear from me two Sundays a month.

Until next time,

Siobhan K.

Aaah, the good old voice in your head, eh? In my experience, it’s usually incorrect. We all live our lives with unique perspectives, so we all have stuff to share. Our brains will probably usually tell us that it’s worthless, but in my experience, it gets better with time. I started daily blogs more than a year ago, and I can’t say the voice inside is completely silenced, but it talks a whole lot less, and certainly not as loud as when I started. Have fun!
